Baggage Handling System

As the lead Systems Engineer on a critical project to upgrade an existing baggage handling system for an international airport, DDI took on a multifaceted role that encompassed both hardware and software aspects. DDI's first task was to consult with the engineering company to fully understand the scope of the upgrade and finalize the project requirements. This involved a thorough analysis of the existing system and determining which hardware components needed upgrading, as well as identifying all necessary software enhancements.

Once the requirements were established, DDI actively participated in revising the hardware Bill of Materials (BOM) and initiated the necessary purchases to ensure we had all the components required for the upgrade. Simultaneously, DDI worked closely with the engineering team to set up a comprehensive development bench. This included integrating DEC VAX systems, implementing the VMS operating system, and incorporating an Oracle database. The team also set up PLCs, simulators, and monitoring equipment to create a robust testing environment that mimicked real-world conditions.

With the hardware aspects underway, DDI turned its attention to the software side of the project. DDI established a software development environment that would allow our team to work efficiently and collaboratively. This involved reviewing the existing codebase in detail and designing upgrades that would meet all the intended requirements. Throughout this process, DDI ensured that our software enhancements would integrate seamlessly with the upgraded hardware components.

After the development phase, DDI oversaw full bench testing to verify the functionality and reliability of our upgrades. Finally, DDI participated in the on-site integration and testing of the upgraded hardware and software, ensuring that the upgraded baggage handling system met all specifications and operated flawlessly in its intended environment.
